pre-schooling

The precarious living conditions in the shantytowns of Manila – a city of 17 million people – seize children as the first victims of their misery.

The general objective of this program is to prepare the poorest of the children to reach elementary school through the availability of a pre-schooling that prepares and qualifies them for entry into elementary school.

Thus, hundreds of children of age 3 to 6 years are accommodated in pre-schooling classes on a daily basis. These classes are given in small schools built in the middle of the shantytowns in order to facilitate the future education of these children.

Teaching is ensured by women of the shantytowns trained by the foundation. The management is in the hands of several Filipino professionals (a general manager, a social worker, a professional teacher). Each center is autonomous and is directed by an association of parents in conjunction with the management group in charge of the program.

The viability of this project (particularly in the long term), depends upon the complete involvement and total implication of the local communities.
Nutrition

The infant mortality rate for children of less than 1 year is very high in the shantytowns of Manila.

To help alleviate this situation, it is there that we have installed a nutrition program and a medical education program for the mothers and pregnant women.

Each month, several dozens of children are given the nutritional aid which allows them, little by little, to regain their weight and health.

A team of professionals takes charge of this program. They are helped, for all of the centers, by mothers of the local shantytowns which have been trained by the professionals.

The objective is to educate the families on how to feed and nourish their children correctly, in spite of very meager means, through the judicious use of local products.
