Big changes on "Smokey Mountain"

SMNewcenter
We have a new center on smokey mountain... Nevertheless, it is not a fruit of expansion but a fruit of expulsion! Indeed, most of the families living on the dumpsite of Vitas, in Manila have been expelled. Our center also has been destroyed but we were able to move with the families who have been relocated at the entrance of the dumpsite.
We had to rebuild quickly a new center to be able to help the families who were trying to survive this new struggle without any help from any official channels. We were able to feed hundreds of them and the program is really experiencing a revival, because of this trial.

In the Phiippines, the new school year starts in June. For the children of « Tulay ng Kabataan », it is the time of big change for the newly arrived who will have to adjust to their new school, with new classmates and new teachers. For the « old » ones, they are already excited to see their friends again at school and feel again that they share a normal life, like any other child!

The farm after few months...

The project launched last september for the most unstable children is a success. The few children sent there are working hard in the farm, loosing this way their bad habits of the street, and at the same time, every tuesday and thursday, they are following an unformal education aimed at bringing them back to school. Hope is growing for children who were playing with despair!

Urgent need: mentally handicapped boys

The first center for mentally handicapped children (« Jerome Lejeune center ») has been opened two years ago, then - because of great needs - another center has been opened last year in order to separate boys and girls (« Our Lady of Guadalupe center »). Today the center for boys is already overcrowded and in order to have a strong follow up of the children we cannot accept too many children at the same time in one center. There is an urgent need of a new center for mentally handicapped boys...

A new project : the farm

For the past years, we noticed that some of the most unstable children had real difficulties to avoid leaving the centers because the temptation to join again their street gangs, or to go back to their street habits was too strong. Starting september 2008, with the help of Bishop Villegas, a center welcome in the Province of Bataan, a group of children. The purpose of « Our Lady of the Mount Carmel » center is to help them cut with these addicting habits through farming and unformal studies... far from Manila!

We celebrated last August 16, 2008 in San Carlos Seminary, the 10th anniversary of the Foundation. 10 years of sufferings and joy, 10 years of a long journey leading us, little by little, to a better service for the most unfortunate children of Manila.

Lend an ear to the poor

A piece of advice, even stronger; a lesson, as old as the written word: “Lend an ear to the poor…” the author inspired by the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament reminds us. Guided by his wisdom, it continues a bit further: “… and do not count upon your worldly riches”…there you have it, a valuable lesson for us all; if not, we risk becoming indifferent.Read the article

Sponsorship of Honor

Habsburg
A few weeks ago, I had the joy of receiving the final confirmation of a sponsorship of prestigious honor for the Tulay ng Kabataan foundation. It concerns Her Imperial Highness Regina von Habsburg. Having married Otto von Habsburg, the elder son of the last emperor of Austria, Charles (who was beatified by the late Pope John-Paul II in October 2004),Read the article
